Enterprise Service Oriented Architecture (ESOA)

Open, flexible and combinable applications pave the way to success

In the past, large, unwieldy and, in most cases, excessively bloated applications often meant that enterprises ran software that was powerful but not really tailored to meet their needs. With applications like these, processes could only be adapted to real-life requirements to a limited degree and users frequently found it difficult to identify and understand connections. In short, a mismatch existed between users and systems.

All that's about to change with the SAP initiative Enterprise Service-Oriented Architecture. ESOA is SAP's blueprint for streamlining your existing applications and making them flexible, combinable and easy to reuse. Since making the change to ESOA, SAP can now enable the combination of a wide range of functions and the enhancement of these with external functions.

ESOA allows for more precise mapping of business processes in your enterprise. Process flows can be closely aligned with real-life processes, which, in turn, makes the application much easier for users to understand. In addition, interfaces allow internal SAP functions to be joined up with functions from external providers. The same principle applies to the use of Web services, such as stock market information services or services providing information from supplier or customer systems.

Reuse and simplify

Functions such as invoice processing can be reused again and again in different areas of an enterprise. For example, this specific function is required to process both customer and supplier invoices. In the SAP environment, these functions are used in the SAP CRM, SAP ERP and SAP SRM applications. SAP SRM already comprises dozens of service components, each of which covers a specific subprocess based on real-life requirements (such as the creation of a purchase order). All processes and functions released by SAP are managed and controlled using the SAP Enterprise Service Repository. As a result, all functions are unified and standardized. Non-SAP applications can access these objects and exchange data via standardized interfaces and protocols (like SOAP or HTTP).

In this way, SAP SRM has aligned itself with the latest global technological innovations and, in several respects, exceeded expectations. Thanks to its use of standardized interfaces and protocols, the application can now be enhanced and upgraded to meet individual customer requirements. apsolut has already acquired extensive expertise in the creation of Web services such as those based on SAP Process Integration (formerly SAP Exchange Infrastructure). Ensuring a process-oriented and user-friendly integration of these functions is therefore a key priority for all of our consultants. Part of this process involves simplifying complicated information to make it easily understood by end users.
